On December 16, 2012, jyoti Singh (Nirbhaya) and her male friend had just stepped out of a movie theater in South Delhi and were looking for an auto rickshaw to get back, when an off-duty chartered bus stopped in front of them and offered to give them a ride.
jyoti Singh was a 23-year-old physiotherapist intern and her friend, Awindra Pratap Pandey, the bus was carrying six male occupants including the driver. and soon the bus moved to an off route.
when they objected, Awindra was hushed away. then they came to know that something is wrong with us. the bus doors were locked, a fight broke down between jyoti singh’s friend and the drunk men who started to harass her.
Hit by iron rode, Awindra unconscious six men dragged her to the back of the bus and raped her one by one. As she started fought back, her attackers wounded her physically. one of the attackers inserted a rusted rode in her private part, ripping her genital organs and insides apart. bruised and severely bleeding,
jyoti Singh and her unconscious friend were then thrown out off the moving bus in the night. In an attempt to kill her. the attackers even tried to run her over but her friend pulled her towards the pavement. she was Half dead and in pain, later they two were found and taken to Safdarjung Hospital, where they were given emergency treatment.
jyoti Singh, born and brought up in Delhi to parents from an Uttar Pradesh village, 11 days after the assault, jyoti Singh a was transferred to a hospital in Singapore where she died from her injuries two days later. before her death she made two police statements in the hospital. She said she wanted justice against the six attackers. according to medical and police reports,jyoti Singh had several bite marks on her body while her intestines, genitals and uterus were gravely damaged.
All the accused were soon arrested and charged with sexual assault and murder. The juvenile was given the maximum sentence of three years and was sent to a reform facility. He was later released, while Ram Singh, the bus driver, committed suicide in Tihar Jail during trial. On September 10, 2013, the remaining four victims were found guilty of rape and murder.
The juvenile was sent to a correction home and has been released since. The four others were sentenced to death in 2013 and their capital punishment was upheld by the Supreme Court on Friday – four-and-a-half years after the incident. and the reaming four victims was punished to hang. later the victims were punished to hang on the day 20 march 2020 on morning 6 am after 7 years.
